Chickens

From mid April to mid October, depending on weather, the main laying hen flock are housed in portable, bottomless range shelters that we move everyday to fresh grass.  Because of the reality of wild predators we have to keep the hens in the portable shelters. We are able to let them free-range from their shelters for a few days, then we keep them in for a day or two.  This confuses the predators because they won't know when the hens are loose.  This minimalizes our losses while allowing the hens to free-range.  Our "happy" hens have the opportunity to scratch and peck around on the ground to their hearts delight.  They also enjoy a diet of certified organic laying ration.  Late autumn finds the hens moving indoors where we continue feeding the layer ration.  Here they are free to scratch around in their bedding of pine shavings looking for kitchen scraps and bits of extra grain that we spread for them.

Ducks

We also raise Khaki Campbell ducks on the farm.  They are a breed that was developed in the UK specifically for egg production.  They lay a large white egg.  They are excellent foragers in the spring, summer and fall when they are out on pasture.  In the winter they are housed with the chickens.  They are a powerhouse of nutrition.
